Style Inspiration: 4-5 inches
This article is part of a style inspiration series.
Learning to style your hair without extensions and wigs in ways that make you feel pretty is key to falling in love with your natural hair and enjoying wearing it.
While this length is longer than a TWA, it’s still pretty short, but don’t be dismayed. You have options! You’ll also notice that your fro is getting fuller, which is always beautiful.
Here are some styles that are suitable for this length.
Fro
You can never fail with a simple, moisturized, beautiful, undefined fro. The shape of your hair will dictate how your TWA looks. Consider getting it trimmed so it’s even.
Add accessories like decorative bobby pins and headbands to spice up your look.
Defined Fro with Finger Coils
If you want to add some definition to your fro, you can create coils with your fingers or a comb.
Once your hair is completely dry, you can leave them in place or separate them.
Chunky Fro with a Twist Out
You can also add definition to your fro with a twist out.
Traditional Twist Out
Flat Twist Out
A flat twist out will elongate your hair more.
Chunky Fro with a Braid Out
A braid out will look similar to a twist out. Try both and see which one you like more.
Two Strand Twists
At this length, you might be able to get a little hang time with two strand twists.
Cornrows
When people think about cornrows for short hair, they automatically think of “straight backs.” Get creative and think about all the cool ways you can part your hair for cornrows.
Also, learning to cornrow and flat twist increases your styling options. Take the time to learn. Be patient with yourself and practice often. Eventually, you’ll get it. Don’t expect to get it the first time you try. That’s not how learning works.
Flat Twists
Like cornrows, get creative with parting when you flat twist. The variations are endless!
Roll, Tuck & Pin
If you can’t cornrow or flat twist YET, you can create similar styles by rolling your hair. These styles are perfect when you need to get ready for work quickly or create a more “put together” look for an event.
Bantu Knot Out
At this length, bantu knot outs give you a similar look to a twist out. It can also be an alternative to a rollerset.
Rollerset
Rollersets are the way to get perfect curls. Technique and product selection are key to getting great results. This style takes time and patience to master. Take your time and make sure your hair is completely dry.
Combo: Flat Twists + Twist Out
Creativity shines, and styling options are infinite when you combine styles.
