How to See the Beauty in Natural Afro Hair

Once you’ve finally decided to love and embrace your hair, begin to open your eyes and practice seeing its beauty. When you see afro hair online, in person, or the media, observe what makes it beautiful and unique. It’s a shift in perspective that’s worth making.

Here are five characteristics of our texture that make it beautiful and unlike any other texture. I know I’m missing some, so add yours in the comments.

It holds styles easily

Twists and braids don’t unravel. Afros stay in place and don’t flop.

It has natural volume and defies gravity

Whether your hair is dense or not, if you comb out a braid or twist out, your hair is big and beautiful. Even simple twists have volume and a fluffy quality for many people. You can’t deny the beauty in these twists. No other texture can do this.

Afro hair makes simple styles look intricate

Simple twists that are wrapped and pinned create styles that look like they took hours to do when they only took minutes to achieve. Only our hair can do this because of its texture.

It can be cut and molded into shapes

Those perfect afros of the 60s and 70s. Chef’s kiss! And look at this creative genius!

Our hair can be styled in more ways than any other texture

Our hair holds wet sets like roller or rod sets, twist outs, and braid outs better than any other texture. Many are amazed at its natural versatility. It can be straightened, left to shrink into a fro, and worn in a stretched or blow-dried fro. This list goes on.
